Brett Allen, viola
BRETT ALLEN is Assistant Principal Viola of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. He joined the orchestra in 1991. Allen is originally from Hopewell, NJ, where he began studying violin at age 8. He has degrees from Boston University and the Cleveland Institute of Music. Earlier in his career, Allen was a lead-violinist with the USAF Strolling Strings of Washington, D.C. During this time he entertained at the White House, State Department, and Chief of Staff residences, and toured worldwide. Allen has also held first desk positions with the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra of Ontario, and the Sacramento Symphony. He has subbed with the Pittsburgh Symphony and the National Arts Centre Orchestra of Ottawa. Allen is a published composer. His work, Nativity Scenes, Suite for String Orchestra, is published by Oxford University Press. He is an avid cyclist. He and his wife are foster parents for the State of Ohio.
