David Thomas, clarinet

Following CSO Principal Clarinetist DAVID THOMAS' performance of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto in September, 1997, Senior Arts Critic of the Columbus Dispatch, Barbara Zuck, wrote, “Thomas, clearly, is an artist who strives  to try more, do more, say more." His numerous solo appearances with the CSO have always been well received. Thomas has also demonstrated his versatility on the clarinet through such works as Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue  and Bourbon Street Parade.

Born into a foreign service family, David Thomas grew up as a world traveler, living in India and Iran as well as Washington D.C.  After beginning clarinet studies at age 12, Thomas continued with the instrument and graduated from Northwestern University.  He also studied with Sidney Forrest at the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, Maryland.  Prior to coming to Columbus in 1989, he spent six years as Principal Clarinet of the Kennedy Center  Opera Orchestra.  He has also performed with the National Chamber Orchestra, and the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra, among others.

Thomas is also a well known featured recital artist around Washington D.C., including such venues as the prestigious Phillips Collection.  He has won several national and international music competitions, including first prize from the International Clarinet Society at the age of 18.

In his spare time, Thomas enjoys hiking, collecting antique quilts, cooking and gardening.
